Pursuing a sustainable world through better data

Our Services

Juniata Analytics is a tech start-up working at the intersection of business, sustainability, and software to help organizations calculate, analyze, and share sustainability information across internal operations and supply chains. While we are developing our minimum viable software products, we are currently offering consulting services to help businesses collect or analyzing sustainability data for internal purposes or external reporting needs.

Philip is an experienced geospatial data analyst, with a focus on food and forestry supply chains. He is a graduate of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University with a degree in Geography and Geology. He also received a masters degree from the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UC Santa Barbara. During his time at the Bren School, Philip got his first experience working in the nonprofit sector applying his data analysis skills on the ground to help optimize the profitability of smallholder farmers in Kenya with a local nonprofit group.

Philip continued his career in the nonprofit sector when he joined The Sustainability Consortium (TSC). While at TSC, Philip helped businesses adopt risk-based sourcing procedures for supply chains using insights derived from a trade network mapping tool he developed for dozens of commodities and consumer goods products.

Philip later became a published author in the world renowned journal Science for his work on machine learning applied to global deforestation. Philip’s algorithm automatically identifies the causes of deforested parcels of land (e.g., permanent land clearing for agriculture versus temporary deforestation from agroforestry practices or wildfires). His work is featured in the Global Forest Watch platform developed by the World Resources Institute and has garnered him prominent speaking roles including the keynote at the AI for Sustainable Finance Seminar hosted by the Alan Turing Institute and the University of Oxford, as well as a featured presenter role at the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Annual Conference.

Co-Founder

Director of Product Development

LinkedIn

Caroline has been working in the corporate sustainability sector for 10 years. She is a graduate of the University of Arkansas, where she studied Biological and Environmental Engineering and obtained an MBA from the Walton College of Business. After college, she led the research team for the Food, Beverage & Agriculture Sector at The Sustainability Consortium (TSC), where she helped develop key performance indicators for consumer goods companies across several environmental and social sustainability issues. TSC is where Caroline and Philip met, and the rest became history. After TSC, Caroline was a consultant for Walmart, where she worked closely with the sustainability department and the food sourcing departments for Walmart, Sam’s Club, and ASDA in the UK on strategic food sourcing projects and pilot programs that included a sustainability component.

Recognizing the opportunity that access to data through improved technology platforms could offer businesses committed to sustainability, she went on to graduate from the Turing School of Software & Design and became an active software developer. She proceeded to earn an Amazon Web Services Solutions Architect Associate Certificate and spent some time developing secure, cloud-based infrastructure for Cuttlesoft, a custom software development firm located in Denver, Colorado.

Caroline and Philip have since led the development of multiple sustainability technology projects together through the newly formed Juniata Analytics. Some of these projects include DrainMarker and the ReFED Insights Engine, both of which are described in the Projects section below. Caroline and Philip are excited to now focus their attention to developing sustainability software solutions for Juniata Analytics that could quickly transform the sustainability industry in the years to come. Their extensive experience working with numerous businesses and nonprofits throughout their careers have given them a keen understanding of the market needs and gaps and how to successfully fill them with the technology products of the future.

ReFED Insights Engine

The ReFED Insights Engine is an online data and solutions hub for food loss and waste, designed to provide anyone interested in food waste reduction with the information and insights they need to take meaningful action to address the problem and move a step forward towards achieving national and international goals of reducing food waste by 50 percent by 2030. Juniata was responsible for crafting the initial vision, managing the project and coordinating contractors, developing the methodologies, collecting and processing data, and developing a web application to automate the data modeling.

DrainMarker

DrainMarker is an app developed and owned by Juniata Analytics that helps communities map and mark stormwater drains. Cities in the Greater Denver area have been using DrainMarker to keep track of which drains have been marked with ‘do not dump’ markers in partnership with local community groups to educate the public and raise awareness about the fact that most storm drains flow to local parks and waterways.
